The firm was established in 1926 by college of Chicago teacher, James (â€Å"Mac†) McKinsey, it was called â€Å"accounting and building advisors†. Macintosh began enlisting experienced officials and preparing them in the incorporated methodology he called his General Survey layout. In Saturday morning meetings he would lead advisors through an undeviating grouping of examination †objectives, methodology, arrangements, association, offices, strategies and staff †while as yet promising them to integrate information and have an independent perspective. McKinsey’s mission was to assist customers with making constructive, enduring, and generous upgrades in their exhibition and to manufacture an extraordinary firm that can draw in, create, energize, and hold excellent individuals. Bower’s vision of the firm was: â€Å"one centered around issues of significance and top-level administration, sticking to the best expectations of respectability, proficient morals, and specialized greatness, ready to pull in and create youngsters of extraordinary capabilities, and focused on consistently raising its height and impact. Most importantly, it was to be a firm committed to the crucial serving its customers greatly well. Nook additionally explained a strategy that each task ought to bring the firm something more than income †experience or notoriety for instance. Grove and his associates accepted that very much prepared, exceptionally savvy generalists could rapidly get a handle on the issue, and through trained examination discover its answer. The firm developed uncommonly locally in the 1950’s which gave a premise to worldwide extension that quickened the pace of development in the 1960’s. Workplaces opened in London, Geneva, Amsterdam, Dã ¼sseldorf and Paris. McKinsey was presently a settled and exceptionally regarded nearness in Europe and North America. To Gupta the errand of information advancement had gotten significantly more mind boggling over the previous decade or so because of three converging powers: †¢ In an inexorably data and information driven age, the sheer volume and pace of progress of new information made the assignment substantially more unpredictable †¢ Clients desires for and requirement for driving edge skill were continually expanding †¢ The firm’s own prosperity had made it considerably more hard to connection and influence the information and aptitude spoke to by 3800 experts in 69 workplaces around the world. Gupta accepted that information is the soul of McKinsey. How does information make an incentive for McKinsey and Company? Making an incentive for a firm methods performing exercises that expansion the estimation of merchandise or administrations to customers. McKinsey does this by attempting not exclusively to ‘serve its customers yet additionally to build up its consultants’. Arbor and his partners accepted that very much prepared, profoundly keen generalists could rapidly get a handle on the issue, and through restrained investigation discover its answer. As a result of the utilization of information the executives one of McKinsey’s customers overseeing chief considered a specific result that â€Å"their esteem added was in their entrance to information, the scholarly thoroughness they bring, and their capacity to assemble comprehension and accord among a various administration group.† In 1980 when Gluck joined the focal little gathering that included the firm office he recommended that â€Å"knowledge improvement must be focal, not a fringe firm action; that it should have been continuous and systematized, not impermanent and venture based; and that it must be the duty of everybody, not only a few†. Gluck was attempting to fabricate a mutual group of information all through the firm. Despite the fact that doing this might be exorbitant Gluck was trusting the advantages would exceed the costs. Information had made an incentive for McKinsey and Company through that its client’s sway considers demonstrated that the new information structure prompted a more extended term center around more profound comprehension of issues. McKinsey and Company’s utilization of information all through the firm helped manufacture durable customer connections. Gupta accepted that information was the center factor in being effective over the long haul. Information is an essential incentive for the McKinsey and Company. Despite the fact that concentrating on creating information all through the firm may prompt less customer work Gupta contended that it was as yet justified, despite all the trouble and would expand an incentive for the firm in the long haul. Fundamentally assess the company’s delicate information the board methodology. I.e individuals. Delicate information the executives is â€Å"less quantifiable and can't be caught classified and put away easily† (Kidd, 1994; Skyrme, 1998) Tacit information is a case of delicate information. Implicit information â€Å"cannot be effectively imparted and shared, is exceptionally close to home, profound established in real life and in an individual’s inclusion inside a particular setting. It is ordinarily alluded to as ‘the information in people’s heads†. â€Å"Soft information gets acknowledged by uprightness of casual position and agreement inside the group.†(Hildreth, Wright and Kimble, 2005). Gluck felt that there was a need to alter the firm’s information advancement center. He accepted that â€Å"knowledge is just significant when it is between the ears of specialists and applied to customers problems.† Knowledge is less viably evolved through the taught work a couple than through the unconstrained association of many. He changed the more organized â€Å"discover-arrange disseminate† model to a â€Å"engage-investigate apply-share† approach. Which is, an all the more free methodology. Despite the fact that McKinsey had received hard information draws near, it despite everything depended intensely on delicate information segments, for example, individual systems, old practices like cross-office moves and solid ‘one firm’ standards like helping different specialists when they called. Not at all like the hard information approach the exchange of information with the delicate methodology isn't through databases and ‘Knowledge Resource Directory’s† it is an increasingly casual technique. It is the point at which the more seasoned staff of the firm aides and shows the new comers by sharing their experience and information.

Nick Carr s article on IT Doesn t Matter in 2003 remains a provocative title aimed at a start to an academic debate relating to technology spending. He argues that there is nothing so special about Information Technology declaring that IT has inevitably gone into the railway lines, electricity, and telegraph approach. According to Carr (2013 p. 6), these infrastructures are currently ordinary factors in terms of economic terms meaning they are just economic inputs. For this reason, Carr argues that they no longer matter since they have become invisible. He says that this is the same case happening to Information Technology. However, according to the article, it is clear that Mr. Carr does not mean that IT does not matter. Instead, he argues that companies may require demonstrating technology usage in order to gain a competitive advantage over others. The Effects Of Using Math Cooperative Learning Groups On A...

Chapter 2 Review of Related Literature The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of using math cooperative learning groups on a second grade class at Cypress Cove Elementary School during the academic year of 2016-2017. This chapter focuses on conceptual understanding and the effectiveness of cooperative learning groups in math as well as the influence of group processing on achievement. Making Connections in Math Cognitive development occurs when students use their current knowledge of a subject’s concepts and procedures to learn new material. Math is no different. Students use what they already know as a foundation for learning new math skills. Teachers who understand this aspect of cognitive development and know how to build on what their students already have learned are effective educators (Sidney Alibali, 2015). In a study of fifth and sixth graders being taught division by fractions, Sidney et al. (2015), found that students drew on their past knowledge to understand new problems. Students used their prior knowledge to activate the transfer of the new information. The Effectiveness of Cooperative Learning Using differentiated instruction helps build existing knowledge and activates prior knowledge. Once students have gained a deeper level of understanding, using cooperative learning groups is beneficial because it enhances academic achievement, student attitudes, and student retention (Hsiung, 2012). Cooperative learning also provides a natural

Online music distribution in post-Napster World free essay sample

How do they affect traditional companies? Anapest Introduced a revolutionary change to the way music was distributed conventionally. Music companies worked with the artists to produce music. Thereafter they invested heavily into burning the music Cads, marketing and advertising of the music and managing the distribution of the music to end customers Vela retailers. Retailers Incurred staffing and real estate and costs. In contrast to this, Anapest was able to bring together over 60 Million users who would hare their collection of music to the remainder of the user base. In doing so, the reach and range of music distribution was significantly raised. Strong Community Feeling, word of mouth effect and High customer awareness led to low cost of marketing for Anapest. Technological improvements in improved broadband speed, internet penetration, and advent of newer portable devices further Incentives the users to use music sharing In comparison to buying the same music from retail stores. For the first time, music was practically available on demand to customer: as, when and where squired for free. The online channel also introduced a possibility of attracting advertisement and other complimentary business models that would earn back revenue In comparison to a CD distribution model where there was no scope to make additional revenue by any other means. Having said that, this was a model that was very easy to replicate and numerous new players emerged online providing similar services to customers. The model also infringed on the licensing agreements of music distribution as recording companies contested that music sharing accounted to music piracy. As customers came to expect music to be available for free, the online sharing portals were increasingly hard pressed to make viable revenue generating model. This had far reaching detrimental impact on the traditional companies engaged in the music production and distribution business. For a start their earning from sale of music dwindled as Increasingly people relied on sharing music rather than buying them from stores.Stores were also constrained by the available shelf space to hold and display music Cads, whereas an online catalogue was practically infinite in size and exhaustive in content. Thus, with the success of Anapest and other similar websites, It was clear that the value of music distribution has significantly moved to pay much for music and were demanding music that could be played back in different mediums as PCs, CD players, MPH players etc. The music recording OFF not be stopped as users simply move on to the other networks.Since Anapest pioneered the music sharing phenomenon, the number of major music recording companies has come down from 6 to 3. Major recording companies had to align their music distribution strategies to reflect the new values and expectations of the user base. Few of these strategies are discussed in the subsequent sections. Nat is the future of album companies? Is there a viable business model for them? There is a huge gap between the model offered by the album companies and the customer needs.Customers want access to the rare music; they want to be able to use it freely, get additional services and not be unreasonably charged for the same. Ere gap is being exploited by the new business models and peer to peer file sharing. Ere two main value propositions of the record companies were to be able to provide recording infrastructure to artists and to be able to provide access to the music racket. However, both these value propositions were not sustainable and will continue to erode over time because of increased digitization, internet bandwidth and decreasing cost of recording music. The stand is vindicated by the sales data of the record companies. As we can see the revenues of the music industry has steadily fallen during the 2001-2010 period. The US revenues declined by 50% over the last decade. For the music companies to be more relevant, they will need to address the customer needs for unrestricted access, broad choice and additional services at a competitive price. As such, the album companies will have to move into newer business models to address the prevalent gap or perish. One viable business model for the album companies could be to look at newer revenue generation models around advertising to reduce pricing pressure on selling music, provide mass customization, partner to increase music availability and incentives buying music by bundling in additional services leveraging. We would propose that the record companies continue to operate in the entire value chain from recording to digital distribution in the new model. However, new skills will be squired for the same which can be obtained through acquisitions or partnerships. For the production of music we propose a risk based crowd sourcing model in which the album companies partner with the public, to raise funding for riskier songs, thus significantly reducing the revenue risk by the record company. For songs below the risk threshold, the companies can continue to fund the artist by themse lves. In a social networked model where the marketer has a huge base of music fans, this will Incentive newer artists to come to the record companies given their huge network f music lovers. En propose an intermediary, which holds the repository of digital music pooled from such an intermediary ii they can invest in such an intermediary. This intermediary will consolidate the available base of music and sell it. This would help to create a huge repository of music which the music fans can rely on. The consumers will have an option to directly stream the music from the intermediary site or download the music. We think that with the increase in broad band speed, consumers can access streaming music without any buffering. This is applicable mainly to developed entries now but gradually the broadband speed in developing will also a reach a level at which they can also use direct streaming services. The basic service can be free to the consumers and revenue can be generated from advertising. The intermediary will also have to provide a premium monthly subscription based service in which it provides value added services like social networking platform for music fans. Fans of particular artists should be able to form groups and discuss. There would be mass customization with customers free to choose different bundles of songs based on their preferences. Additional services like meet the artist when he is on a tour, tickets to concerts, souvenirs memorabilia related to the artist etc. Would have to be bundled with the songs. Record companies will be able to use their contracts and relationship with the artist for materializing the same and this would give room to each for developing their own competitive advantage. Advertising will have to be used extensively around the digital platform as an alternative revenue model. Record companies will again be able to differentiate themselves through their abilities to build effective partnerships to get relevant advertising. Such a model would address many of the pitfalls of the current model and be more relevant by fulfilling customer needs of a getting broad choice, unrestrictive usage and value added services when they buy music. However, the record companies will have to take on the digital marketing avatar for the same. Suggest an appropriate pricing strategy for the album companies in the context of recent developments. We propose a royalty based revenue sharing model between the album companies. The record company will get a share of royalties for the amount they have invested in the production of the song. The dissemination of the royalties would be the accessibility of the distributor. The distribution prices will be decided by the album companies. The price realized per song will be distributed to the intermediary, artist, album companies and public (if crowd funded) based on the royalty share of each. The distribution companies will be able to do a differential pricing for the songs.A pay per download, pricing model may be used. The users would be free to use and distribute the music in any which way without restriction. In a digital social networking context the fans could be used to promote the songs and earn redeemable points against which they would get price discounts. The advertising acceptable levels for the consumer and put him in control of the price as well. A multi-level marketing concept may also be applied wherein the fan could use to resell the music at a price he deems fit and pay a commission to the distributor for the same. The additional artist centered services and option to resell would create an added incentive to purchase music as opposed to download it from a peer to peer file sharing network. Geographical price discrimination will be an important factor in ensuring that the price arbitrage can be neutralized thus discouraging piracy. Price n each country has to be customized and made attractive to the target customers. In summary, we can conclude the business of music distribution is constantly evolving and the ease of sharing music has made the old business models obsolete.Few of the major recording labels have gone out of business and the others had to adapt to the change that the denationalization of music has entailed. With an ever increasingly internet enabled and connected world, music is now pre-packaged and bundled along with other applications for mobile devices. Through some innovative means the recording companies have continued to stay relevant in this challenging segment, albeit with significantly less profits compared to the pre Anapest days.

Genie Human and Normal Life Essay Example

Genie: Human and Normal Life Paper The intent of this essay is to analize the case of Genie, how she became retarded, whether her mental illness was caused by nature or nurture. Also, if Genies rehabilitation could be possible if the case was discovered today and how hopeful we would be that the child could lead a normal life in the long term. The sad story of Genie has touched all of us. Is the nature (genes and heredity ) or the nurture(how she was raised, what Genie was raised around and her experiences or rather environment) that led her to this state? I will be discussing if its nature or nurture hat suits to explain more her situation and if Genie could lead a normal life if looked after and treated like other normal children. There are four areas of development: physical, intellectual, emotional and social. These are build up during the human development which differentiates depending on the age. The fastest period of development is at the early childhood stage where a child can absorb and memorize information took from the surrounding world very easily. Nativists assume that the characteristics of the human species as a whole are a product of evolution and that ndividual differences are due to each persons unique genetic code. Characteristics and differences that are not observable at birth, but which emerge later in life, are regarded as the product of maturation. The classic example of the way this affects our physical development are the bodily changes that occur in early adolescence at puberty. However nativists also argue that maturation governs the emergence of attachment in infancy, language acquisition and even cognitive development as a whole. We will write a custom essay sample on Genie: Human and Normal Life specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Genie: Human and Normal Life specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Genie: Human and Normal Life specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer The environmentalists basic assumption is that at birth the human mind is a abula rasa (a blank slate). This theory states that people learn and acquire ideas from external forces, or the environment. Humans are born with an empty mind, having no knowledge whatsoever. People acquire ideas from the surrounding world, turning simple ideas into complex ones. This blank slate of mind starts off devoid of any knowledge, but then it is written on as a person lives and experiences. Therefore, a person has no identity until after birth. From this point of view psychological characteristics and behavioral differences that emerge through infancy nd childhood are the result of learning. It is how you are brought up (nurture) that governs the psychologically significant aspects of child development and the concept of maturation applies only to the biological. For example, when an infant forms an attachment it is responding to the love and attention it has received, language comes from imitating the speech of others and cognitive development depends on the degree of stimulation in the environment and, more broadly, on the civilization within which the child is reared. Chomsky(1965) suggested that language is an innate aculty . That is to say that we are born with a set of rules about language in our heads which he refers to as the Universal Grammar. The universal grammar is the basis upon which all human languages build. In the case of Genie, the girl has been kept locked in a room tied to a chair and treated like an animal from the parents. She lacked emotional and social development, both very important to a child at the stages of development during the range of birth to puberty. Maslow talks about how important these things are for a human being but Genie was only given food to live. ally poor. Bowlbys (1969) theory of attachment, which views the bond between mother and child as being an innate process that ensures survival. It suggests that children come into the world biologically pre-programmed to form attachments with others, because this will help them to survive. Genie was subject to a maternal care deprivation and the abuse she was subject to was completely inacceptable. If Genies case was discovered at the age of 13 today and I was a nurse, psychiatrist a social worker I would be very unsure that Genie could lead a normal life, become completely ormal as other children. There is a critical time period in the humans life that is the only time one can absorb and develop language and communication skills, which could also explain why Genie never developed these critical tools. ln order to learn and interact with others people need socialization. The possibilities that Genie could lead a normal life in a long term are few however, believe she would definitely be in a much better situation if treated proppelry and she would not have entered in a state of remission. Her rehabilitation and development could be surely possible if ollowed by a physiotherapist or speech therapist. Banduras (1977) social learning theory is a perspective that states that people learn within a social context. It is facilitated through concepts such as modeling and observational learning. people, especially children, learn from the environment and seek acceptance from society by learning through influential models. Banduras bobo doll experiment (Bandura, 1961) demonstrates that if children were witnesses to an aggressive display by an adult they would imitate this aggressive behaviour when given the opportunity. Genie ouldnt be retarded if not left locked in a room for many years which means that she wasnt retarded at birth . The environment where Genie was kept didnt permit her to civilize, walk or talk. She suffered from an environment where she was not nurtured positively. Skinner (1957) believed that language is learnt from other people via behavior shaping techniques. However Genie was isolated in a room where she had nobody to teach her language and she wasnt taught how to bahave. The lack of socialization and neglect are caused by her father and the way he treated her. If enie was retarded at birth, her upbringing still should have been much different. Watson considered that the child was born as a tabula rasa, a blank slate which experience would write on to produce a person. He argues that if we were given a dozen healthy infants and my own specified world to bring them up in, and Ill guarantee to take any one at random and train him to become any type of specialist I might select doctor,lawyer.. and yes, even beggarman and thief , regardless of his talents, perchants, tendencies, abilities, and race of his ancestors ( Watson 1924). The thought the environment was really the only thing that was important in an individuals development. This shows that the environment where she was kept led Genie at this stage. In conclusion, the environment has an important influence and impact on a human beings physical, social and emotional development. In order to develop, particularly in areas of congnition a human needs to be exposed to new things. Especially children are affected by their external world. The contast between Environmentalists and nativists make us reflect on how important both genetics and environment are for human development. With regards to all the theories and argument, I am convinced that Genie can be rehabilitated to lead a normal life with a speech therapist Genie will surely develop. His case is like an adult how has migrated to a different area or country, with time him or her get to learn the language. Physical characteristic can be greatly influenced by the environment. Bandura (1977) the social factors are more importance in the formation of personality than biological. This means that the environment we found ourselves can use preferable tools such as practise nutrition ECT. Cited in Hayes (2003). There is some ethod of development that needs to be practice daily, walking is a major factor; for a child to be able to walk he needs a support. Organizational Technology Plan

Organizational Technology Plan Introduction In the contemporary world, technology has become an integral part of organizations; however, it has affected the society and the environment mainly due to the changes that come about with it, which people have to adapt. Generally, it plays an important role in the field of business, since it provides tools such as internet that in this era, all companies have adopted. Simply, there are several types of technologies used in business including internet, laptops and computers, and software.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Organizational Technology Plan specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Technology supports the general business functions in a number of ways. First, the use of internet has eased communicating through face book, as well aiding inter-business communication through video conferencing, e –mails and even chat rooms. In some companies, managers require employees to be in possession of devices like laptops and smart phones, which are easily portable, in order to stay connected remotely. Moreover, companies require their employees to use company cars fitted with GPRS locators, thus ensuring safety of their cars. Finally, every business needs software to operate online, and in this case, they may opt for Voice over Internet Protocol (Voip) instead of analog signal, especially when conducting online conferencing and voice calls. Nevertheless, each business should consider its goals before choosing the technology to use, since not all technologies work for any business. This paper will discuss the organizational technology plan for DirecTV, a direct broadcast satellite service based in El Segundo, California, which transmits digital satellite television and audio to households in the United States. Challenges presented to management due to managing existing technology Given that the emergence of technology brings about organizational change, managers are always faced with various challenges. One of the limitations that DirecTV will face is the high or overdependence on technology among people to solve problems, thus making them tend not to think on their own. In addition, installation of computers in an organization requires staff training on how to use such computers, thus DirecTV will have to incur high operational costs. Moreover, Gwartney et al (2008, p. 178) argues that technology leads to reorganization, such that, some employees who are familiar with a certain technology may be promoted, while those who are not may require special training or are demoted altogether. In modern labour market, employment patterns indicate that computer literate persons are more likely to be employed than their unskilled counterparts are.Advertising Looking for research paper on communications media? Normally, as technology changes, DirecTV will also change its products and processes, while employees’ skills and behavior will have to be subjected to an effective change model to make them adaptive to such changes. In addition, e–recruiting has become common with companies, as it is fast, easy and cost effective, with wide outreach. However, the biggest challenge with this technology is DirecTV may find it attract some qualified applicants who may not be familiar with this method, especially if the company does not give an option of postal services. Methods of addressing emerging technology DirecTV has to be involved with technology because of the benefits that technology provides; for instance, it takes a short time to perform a task or process a large amount of information. DirecTV should embrace knowledge management, which according to Awad (2004, p. 12 0) is â€Å"the name given to the set of systematic and disciplined actions that an organization can take to obtain the greatest value from the knowledge available to it. â€Å" This involves innovative ideas, designs, new processes and methods, as well as strategies used by the HR. In addition, history of the organization, suppliers, and customers’ information is essential in enhancing effective communication within and outside the organization. In order for DirecTV to embrace technology, the management must ensure that present employees are well informed and well trained on the technology in order to avoid biasness. In addition, the staff should be well prepared to embrace the technology used in the organization. The management should always inform the staff about any changes and elaborate their role in such changes. In addition, discussion with staff about why the change is necessary to the company and the obstacles that come with it is important. Areas in Which Technolo gy Impacts the Basic Functions of Management Technology has a great impact on management functions; first, there is introduction of change function of planning, as technology may prompt DirecTV to alter or improve its mission and objectives in order to be in line with prevailing business conditions.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Organizational Technology Plan specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In staffing, technology may lead companies to make changes in the human resources such as redeployment, laying-off some staff to eliminate redundancy and enhancing training programs for the new technology. On the other hand, technology has allowed firms to save on hiring costs, as well as benefiting from opportunity cost of space that has to be avoided, since some employees can work from home. Technology has also enhanced management directing function, as it enhances effective communication, thus motivating the employ ees to understand the goals and objectives of a company and even accomplish their career objectives. Moreover, with the help of technology, a manager does not need to be present in order to his employees, as this can be done through voice calls or video conferencing. In organizing function, technology has allowed organizations to be efficient in utilization and allocation of resources, thus yielding maximum benefits with minimal waste. Lastly, controlling function has been enhanced, especially due to the fact that employees and processes appraisal and evaluation have been automated, making it easy to monitor and initiate changes when required. Conclusion The success of DirecTV in coping with technology changes depends on how it is prepares for such change. Success requires DirecTV to manage its abilities; however, right leadership and effectively evaluating the organization’s ability to implement transformation are essential. Nevertheless, given that change is always inevitab le, managers should always be prepared to embrace change. References Awad, E. M. (2004). Knowledge Management. New Delhi: Pearson Education India. Spiro Agnew and Construction Kickbacks (ethic case study) Essay

Spiro Agnew and Construction Kickbacks (ethic case study) - Essay Example Matz responded by giving kickbacks to Agnew for every contract they were awarded. Matz faces no criminal prosecution for cooperating with the prosecution. Most contracting firms could no longer win contracts unless they participated in such activity in Maryland. Through their complains, ‘whistle blowing’, the Spiro Agnew and Construction kickbacks are revealed. Although this practice was common in Maryland, it is unacceptable. The fundamental canons in Engineer Ethics Code states that engineers hold paramount the welfare of the public as they perform their professional duties and be done in areas of competence. They should also build professional reputation on merit of their services and compete fairly with others. This practice is unfair since there is no fair competition for contracts. Whistle blowing is the best action. The engineer should alert relevant persons on the legal or moral corruption. This is a controversial issue that is challenging because of repercussions that the engineer might face. The legal body together with good political will help in such like situations. Competitive bidding creates a level play ground for contractors participating in a bidding competition. For this case, competitive bidding could not have solved the problem because of misuse of office by the politicians and engineers as well (Fleddermann, 2011). 4.14 What is the ethical status of a campaign contribution given to a politician to secure future business? Is this a bribe? Is it the same as a kickback? Perhaps line drawing would help answer this question. Many times, kickbacks are offered from an appreciation point of view after award of a contract. It is secretly given, mostly in terms of money for a particular assistance or work given. Unlike bribe which is given before a service is rendered. Campaign contribution given by a contractor to a politician to secure future business is a bribe since it is used to

Making career Personal Statement Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Making career - Personal Statement Example These entry-level positions are actually glorified secretarial jobs wherein responsibilities include making sure that ads move smoothly through the execution process. Accordingly, depending on the agency an account executive or an account coordinator may be given some competitive-analysis responsibility (see the job post in this website: http://jobs.guardian.co.uk/job/320526/press-media-account-executive-various-accounts-to-24k) Indeed, according to a book published by Wetfeet, Inc. on careers in advertising and PR, "the lower you are on the account [management] totem pole, the more it's about execution. The higher you are, the more it's about strategy." (p. 99) In analysing a job advertisement in fig. 1, it is easy to understand that people entering account management must have strong social skills, since a good chunk of their job involves managing people. As one insider said, "As you move up in account management, one of your responsibilities becomes managing people below you. But even the lowest levels, you're managing people in other departments." They should be able to think like fashion entrepreneurs/designers and creatives since they have to deal with both camps. As Wetfeet, Inc., a leading PR firm emphasized, in terms of personality, creatives and clients are often diametrically opposed and the better direction you give the creatives, the better ads you get. With these facts on hand, I conclude that people with their sights set on advertising account management in the fashion industry should be organised and good at multitasking, because they'll be working on a variety of things simultaneously. In addition, account management candidates should have a good understanding of marketing and selling fashion merchandise, since the job is about helping clients sell their goods and selling the agency to others. TASK 2: It has been said that The Good Girl or The Good Boy syndrome hardly ever lands an employee to top leadership post and even slows down professional growth and career progress in the advertising industry. Here an employee place more value on being in good terms, and therefore agreeable, with his superiors at the expense of searching for new and better ideas that will benefit his company or the product that the company markets. In the advertising industry, where innovation is very important, the pathway to a better career trajectory is to adopt the contrarian position - the ad man who finds new path, ends up moving the company or a product ahead. I believe that bringing this unique perspective to work in the advertising field offers growth opportunities and expands possibilities for the company that I will work for as opposed to maintaining the status quo or being docile in the fast-paced and cutthroat competition in the advertising world. One of my resource persons confirmed this line of thinking as she told her own success story. Alexa Simons was an assistant account manager for a mid-size advertising agency. Their accounts, however, were impressive. Her team, for instance, services the PR and advertising needs of a perfume line. About a year ago, this client decided to decentralise their advertising in the management's belief that the advertising efforts are not delivering quantified returns. Alexa's superior accepted the decision and devised strategies that worked around what the client wanted. However, after a month Alexa took the initiative of reviewing consumer research and found that certain critical measures had declined sharply after the

Cultural Impacts Essay Example for Free

Cultural Impacts Essay â€Å"Culture (from the Latin cultura stemming from colere, meaning to cultivate,) generally refers to patterns of human activity and the symbolic structures that give such activity significance. Different definitions of culture reflect different theoretical bases for understanding, or criteria for evaluating, human activity. In general, the term culture denotes the whole product of an individual, group or society of intelligent beings. It includes technology, art, science, as well as moral systems and the characteristic behaviors and habits of the selected intelligent entities. †(Wikipedia) Any culture can be viewed as a blend of values, norms, institutions and artifacts of a civilization that has been passed on from generations through learning alone. The ideological perspective of life and the significance of things in it form the values of a society. Norms, are the expected collective behavior of the people where as the institutions are the structures within the society that transmit theses values and norms. Also, artifacts are the relics or the materialistic representation of a culture, derived from within it. Thus, cultures basically evolve and thrive on the basis of religion, historical background, environment and the social structure. Religious beliefs are typically the central themes of different cultures and more often than not the basic values are a derivative of them. For example, the 10 Commandments of Christianity or the five precepts of Buddhism are guidelines that transform the behavior of their followers. Similarly, religion occasionally is also implicated with government, as in a theocracy. The European and the New World cultures have been profoundly influenced by Christianity for at least the last 500 to 1700 years. Likewise Islams influence has fashioned a great deal of the North African, Middle and Far East regions for more than a 1000 years. Historical incidents also add new dimensions to any culture. For instance, most of the Commonwealth countries and the Europe celebrate a public holiday on the Boxing Day. On this day, the people organize feasts, festivals and certain sports in order to celebrate and also to share these rejoicing moments with the poor and the needy. There is no precise basis of this cultural carnival but only some theories that stem out from some historical happenings. Some believe that it was a day when people presented gifts to those who had worked throughout the year for them. Others argue that it was an annual gathering of extended families in the feudal times in which the lord of the estate handed out stipends to the serfs. Another group disputes that it was basically the day of the year when the church would distribute its donation money to the poor. Whatever may be the explanation, the Boxing Day is now an integral part of the western culture. (Wikipedia) The influence of different cultures on trade and commerce is profoundly instrumental and therefore it is not surprising that business tactics have diversely evolved in different regions of the world. In fact, the technological developments of the late 1990’s, in the arena of electronic media have added new dimensions to the concept. Consequently, the global giants of the corporate sector have been lavishly investing in examination of the cultural influences on the regional economies in order to maximize profits. â€Å"In China, for example, the foundation of Chinese respect for hierarchy and the family social collective is based upon the relational norms expounded by the Confucius and legal codes such as those developed during the Tang Dynasty. This institutionalized relational logic has shaped a society whose transactional order rests on social obligation to higher authority and to the family rather than on rules oriented to protecting the individual. Chinese capitalism is seen to be intrinsically different from the Western capitalism because of this contrast in institutional framing over a long period of time. † (Warner 2003) These and other brands of cultural values of a society are carefully considered when industries are being setup or when corporations are being established. This facilitates in determining the managerial skills required in the executive professionals who are responsible for communicating and representing their companies within the local industries. A working paper series issued from the George Washington University, discusses the U. S. /Mexican business alliances negotiations and the impact of their respective cultures on them. Mexico’s mestizo culture with its strong collectivist touch has embedded the people with the capacity to share power or authority equitably and the gift to accept and tolerate uncertainty and ambiguity in situations. However, they have also inherited the aptitude for individualism and tend to get involved in a loosely held social structure with little or no care for others. This is contrary to the culture in the United States, where people long for absolute power, are highly skeptical of ambiguous scenarios and more often than not downplay relationships. All, this along with the socio-political history of the two nations-which has been marred by discords and suspicion- is significantly determining in their mutual business alliances. (Teegen and Doh 2002) Moreover, the cultural heritage of a region characterize the production and sale of several products that otherwise do not correspond to the world wide demand. For instance, the annual Basant euphoria in the Punjabi region of the Indo-Pakistan, in which people fly kites and festivals are organized, much business is spawned. It becomes the very attraction for the tourists who converge here from all parts of the world, and the economic activity generated only in the city of Lahore has been estimated to be around PK Rupees 1. 5 to 2 billion annually. The proceeds of the events are shared by almost every one including the people belonging to the seasonal cottage industries and even the local vendors. Thus, the big corporations plunge into the scene and grab at every opportunity to escalate sales. The competitive environment forces them to inspect the cultural characteristics of the event and then to employ this knowledge in launching innovative products in the market as well as in transforming their already existing marketing techniques. (The News 2007) For a progressive business structuring in a region or country, political culture-which itself is a subsidiary of the social culture-can be of immense significance. An illustration can be vividly observed in the political history of Pakistan and the revolutionary rule of its Premier Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto (1973-77), which was influenced by the socialism philosophy of the Soviet Union. He aggressively followed these policies and nationalized most of the Pakistan’s industries. (Wikipedia) Consequently, the foreign investors and the big multinationals lost faith in the country and capital were taken out of the country. Locally, twenty two families in Pakistan had owned most of these nationalized banks, companies and industrial units. Sadly, this resulted into a deindustrialization in Pakistan, as none of the families have ventured in to even a single industrial project since the last 28 years. (Pakistan link) â€Å"In the fall of 1991, in the midst of the NAFTA negotiations, Vitro Sociedad Anonima (Vitro), the $3 billion Mexican glass maker, had signed a tentative $800 million joint venture with Corning Inc. †¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Just two years later, the joint venture was dissolved. According to company officials and external analysts, cultural differences were a principal cause of the alliance’s failure. † (Teegen and Doh 2002) Investigations showed that the Mexicans believed that Corning was a bit impulsive in their decision making; the Americans felt Vitro had a very time-consuming approach. Vitro management despised the frankness of the Americans, while polite Vitro executives, sometimes gave Americans the impression that they were reluctant to admit concerns and errors. (Teegen and Doh 2002) Thus, when businesses are being setup in different regions of the world, there is a need to develop a correlation between the corporate and the social cultures. The Assyrian Sacred Tree Essay -- Mythology

A traditional interpretation of what has become known as the Assyrian Sacred Tree conceives of it as the date palm. Consisting of a series of nodes and interlacing vines, the depiction of the â€Å"tree† contradicts the morphological appearance of a date palm seems at best to be a highly abstracted consolidation of various botanical characteristics from separate distinct species. Despite recent proposals by several art historians and botanists to conclusively determine its proper classification, indubitable evidence unlocking the enigma behind this timeless symbol—a sacred fountainhead for many western religions originating in the Near East—has yet to uproot the deep seeded academic insistence on the date palm. The â€Å"Sacred Tree,† (fig. 1) was originally positioned behind the king’s throne. The scene shows two genii, sometimes with birds’ heads and sometimes with men’s heads and the horned hats of gods. Each of the winged figures holds a bucket and reaches out with an oval object toward a stylized â€Å"tree.† The composition has been read as being based on bilateral symmetry, with the vertical stalk-like structure crowned by a palmette. A meticulous examination reveals that although balanced, it has many discrepancies on both sides that deviate from perfect mirror symmetry. Ashurnasirpal appears twice, shown from two sides, dressed in ceremonial robes and holding a mace connoting his authority. The figure of the king on the right makes an invocative gesture a god in a winged disk in the top center of the relief. A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand

â€Å"A house divided against itself cannot stand† The phrase, â€Å"A house divided against itself cannot stand† became famous as a quotation from Lincoln’s â€Å"A house divided† speech delivered at 17 June 1858, in what was then the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield, upon accepting the Illinois Republican Party's nomination as that state's senator of the United States . The speech became the launching point for his unsuccessful campaign.Abraham Lincoln was not the first one who used the â€Å"A house divided against itself cannot stand† phrase: Sam Huston used it during the Senate debate on the Compromise of 1850,during the War of 1812; a similar line appeared in a letter from Abigail Adams to Mercy Otis Warren. Thomas Paine in 1776 and Thomas Hobbes, in 1651 used something very similar. We, as humans, are social beings†¦so we cannot live alone. We need friends and people with whom we can share our thoughts, our feelings, our life, our e xperiences and so on. For this reason we form all kinds of groups (friends group, school group, workplace group). If the members of a group are not united, they will be much more easier to defeat by a â€Å"common enemy† or by nature itself. If a group (house) is divided against himself, members will be more easier to beat one by one, then if they are united and their power cumulated. Even if, hypothetically, there is only one group and there will be no external danger, if the member of that group is disunited, the group could not stand and, sooner or later, if the conflicts are not solved, the group will divide in at least two other smaller groups( each one more powerless than the original group will be if its members are united). The â€Å"A house divided against itself cannot stand† phrase applies very well to smaller (but more bounding) groups. For example, a family where the partners are always arguing against each other, it will be very hard (if not impossible) to get over the life challenges and succeed together in life. It is even worse if that family involves at least a child, because it is very probably that he will follow his parents` example and be more rigid with his partner when he will grow up.Another good example are the groups formed in a world full of sharks all running for the biggest prey and winning: the businessman world. If two (or more) business associates are not united they will surely lose because bigger or more cunning sharks will profit from their division against each other. In conclusion a house divided against itself cannot stand (SEE What I did there? ) because it is much more difficult conquer it if its members are united than applying the famous quotation : divide et impera! .

How Is Energy Transferred - 1431 Words

How is energy transferred? This question can be answered in many ways and forms, let’s elaborate.†¨Energy in the dictionary meaning is, ‘the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity’. In my own view, energy is the most vital and unrecognized strength this world has. Energy can make anything move or perform certain movements or tasks, it can even be used to make non-living things move. That is called Kinetic Energy. Kinetic energy is energy that is stored and used by any moving object. When an object is using kinetic energy, it creates another form of energy called Gravitational Potential Energy. This is energy that is stored in an object, it is also the energy of a particle acquired from position, or condition, rather than motion. Things that have potential energy are a raised weight, coiled spring, a charged battery or even food etc, energy causes change within systems.†¨The dictionary meaning is ‘the energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position relative to others, electric charge, electric charge, and other factors’. Elastic potential energy is the potential in which when you pull something such as an elastic band, and the further you pull and stretch the item, the more Elastic potential it possesses upon release of the object.†¨ The way energy travels is by vibrating in waves which can either be a path through longitudinal or transverse waves. These waves are the path to transferring energy.
